We know of Francis Chettle by way of the Freeman's List. He was apprenticed to John Bracebridge (Woolstapler) on 12 August 1758 and made Freeman on 7 August 1772. Samuel Chettle was made Free on 22 June 1790. Also Francis paid 10 shillings for his Freedom in 1771 and went to live in Preston Bisset, Buckinghamshire.

Thomas Chettle served 7 years 9 months in the 3rd Foot Guards and was medically discharged on 25th May 1787 aged 37. Recommended to enter the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

Our line continues with Robert Chettle Jnr who was born around November 1741.

Robert Chettle Snr took up the trade of Gardener and went to work at Owthorpe, Notts. Owthorpe is only 7 miles from Welby where his Grandparents had lived. His Uncle Robert was living in Welby at the time and he probably obtained the work for him, also he left Robert his house in Ab Kettleby in his Will. However, Roberts Father, John probably took ill or died around 1744/45 and Robert came back to Leicester and remained here with his Family.

There is also link here in that Ralph Chettle is in the records as having land in High Street (now Highcross Street) known as 18 Highcross Street. It was in the Chettle Family in 1708 and 1729, which in 1750 is in the name of Robert Chettle (with the same tenant living in the property, the Topp Family).

This is a link that clearly proves the early Chettle Family residing in Leicester are our own, this along with the Freemen of Leicester proven Chettle history shows our links back from the present day to 1345.

Robert Chettle also inherited the house at 18 Highcross Street Leicester known to us as "Chettelles Howse" officially known today as Wygston's House.
