The Henry 1 Penny Minted and Hammered in Leicester by Chetell the Moneyer 1100 - 1135

Chetel the Moneyer of Leicester Silver Penny

Henry I (1100-1135), Penny, Pellets in Quatrefoil type [BMC XIV], Leicester, Chitel, chitellvs : on : leic. Chetel the Moneyer of Leicester we know was Scandinavian as were nearly all of the Moneyers in England at this time. Our Chettle Ancestors go back to 1345 in Leicester and had Norwegian Ancestry. The Chettle surname was once Chetil, Chetel and Ketyl as well as De Kettleby (of Kettleby) and in 1100 Ab Kettleby was known as Chetel Bi.

Provenance for the coin is that it is from the 'Beauvais' (France) Hoard.

I have also found out that another Henry I Penny by Chetell was found in a field off of the Melton Road some time ago buy a detectorist in Wymeswold Leicestershire, so I am of the firm belief that Chetel the Moneyer is one of my ancestors. I found the coin in an auction quite by chance.....or was it Chetel asking me to bring him home after 919 years?
