Frederick Leslie was known by his second name Leslie. He was born in Anstey but raised mostly in the Aylestone area of Leicester. He attended school at Lansdown Road, Aylestone Leicester.

During WW1 he served with the Royal Naval Divisions “Nelson” and “Hawke” in France and Flanders. Originally enlisting as a Sailor the Royal Naval Divisions later fought on land and were used alongside the Infantry. He was a Signaller and during a battle he went out under fire to “run the line” which was repairing the signal wire to restore communications. For this he was awarded the Military Medal which as presented to him personally by King George V.

We have recently discovered that at the time when he married Lucy Hill (Widow) he was a Coal Miner and was living at 17 Southview, Windlestone near Ferryhill County Durham. H was living with his friend who he served with in WW1. His friend was John Christopher Burrows and they wrote to each other after the war. While in Leicester we also know that Frederick worked on excavating the Jewry Wall Roman remains in Leicester.
